Axis Professional Services Refreshed A University's Data Center

Problem Overview:

Rivier University is a private Catholic Liberal Arts University located in Nashua, New Hampshire. They had an aging 3-tier data center infrastructure that was presenting major performance issues and challenges for their Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environment. Specifically, desktops were taking an unbearably long time to boot up, about 6 minutes.

In response to Rivier’s performance challenges, Axis Business Solutions provided subject-matter experts to help redesign their data center by utilizing Nutanix technology on a Dell platform. Axis moved their older Dell servers and EqualLogic system to the Dell EMC XC Series Web-Scale Hyper-Converged Appliance, powered by Nutanix software.

This high performance, versatile solution simplifies deployment and management by merging computer and storage into one appliance. The Dell XC Series brings agility, efficiency and reliability to a data center while enabling a business to deploy new applications with minimal IT complexity and operational expenditure.

As a result, Rivier’s infrastructure can support up to 700 virtual desktops while running a variety of core office productivity applications. Rivier University’s efficiency and productivity has immensely improved. Now, their IT department can focus on innovation instead of managing their technology environment. Rivier is also experiencing major performance improvements; the 6 minute boot up time was drastically decreased to about 6 seconds. Moreover, the data center footprint was reduced, which has led to lowered costs associated with power and cooling.

“Axis is a true partner for us. They did a tremendous amount of research and vendor management for us. We were not bombarded by sales reps. Axis understands our environment and constraints. I love the fact that I can simply send an email and receive quotes. In cases where there are different options or alternatives Bob will let me know the options and answer any questions.”

– Heidi Crowell, CIO, Rivier University
